Writing Class

Wow, I didn't realize just how long it's been since I last wrote a post! *sigh*  Oh well, c'est la vie! But, I am taking a Writing Fiction class this quarter, which means, fortunately, that my creative juices are beginning to flow again. :)

So, here is a little something from my class. The assignment was to create two characters, then write a dialogue between them. We were supposed to see how much we could communicate about the characters simply through their dialogue, so I am curious how they come across to readers. Comment and tell me what you think!

           Roommates??

“Hey Ellen!!” I turned at the sound of my name.

“Hi Angie!” I said. “It’s good to see you! How are you?”

“So guess what?!” Angie swung her hair back out of her way.

“Wha...” I didn’t get any further.

“You know the apartment complex just on the other side of campus, right?” Angie asked.  “Well, I just heard that they’re offering a reduced rate for students! Wouldn’t it be awesome to rent an apartment together?! Just think, a place all our own! And so close! It would be perfect! What do you think?!”

     “Umm... it would be different...”

“I know! After spending two years in those dorms, it would be so amazing to have a change of scenery! Ooh, and maybe they would actually let us paint it! I’ve always dreamed of a bright yellow kitchen! What do you think of yellow?”

“I tend to like more subtle colors, actually. Especially on walls.”

“And we could have people over!” Angie hurried on. “We could host study groups, and have some of the girls over for sleepovers, and maybe even throw some parties!”

“I don’t know... I mean, I like people, but I also need some alone time. Don’t get me wrong, I do like people, it’s just...” I stopped, at a loss for words.

“Oh. Well, we wouldn’t have them over all the time. And if you needed some time to yourself, you could always go into your room and shut the door, right?”

“I just don’t know... Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re a great person and would make a wonderful roommate! But, we have such different personalities. I have almost an obsession with neatness, you know, especially when I’m stressed. And I’m a perfectionist. And I don’t always feel very sociable. Don’t you think all that would get on your nerves?”

“You’re not that bad! Besides, you’d have your room, and I’d have mine. So, as long as you could put up with my messes in the kitchen, we’d be fine!” Angie smiled at me.

“Oh.” I said. “Well, thanks for thinking of me, but I... I just don’t think I have the finances for it right now. Music lessons don’t bring in that much, you know! Sorry it wouldn’t work out, but I hope you can find somebody who can room with you! Gotta run to class!”

A Phrase

In Psalm 140 the psalmist writes:

"I said to the Lord, 'You are my God;'" (Ps. 140:6a)

"You are my God." Such a simple, short phrase. Yet how full of meaning.

"You are my God."  Wealth is not my god. Pleasure is not my god. Health is not my god. Happiness is not my god. The Lord, Jehovah, is my God, and no one and nothing else.

"You are my God." He exists. He is. He is solid and true and real.

"You are my God." Not my parent's God, or my brother's God, or even my neighbor's God. Not just the God of the Israelites, or the God of 'those people over there.' It's a choice, a declaration: 'You are my God!'

"You are my God." He is my God. He is Lord of lords, in my life, too. He is Savior, for me. He is omniscient, and He guides me. He is Jehovah-Jireh, provider of all I need. He is Ruler of heaven and earth, including my small section. He is Creator, and I am one of His creations. He is in all, over all. When He says go, I will go. When He says do, I say, "Yes, Lord." He is highest, and first in everything, the core of my entire life.

"I said to the Lord, 'You are my God.'"

Such a short, simple phrase...

Creative

This past week, I have begun to dive into my pile of sewing... and promptly began to be afraid that I would mess it up, ruin the fabric, end up with something I detested... and so on and on.

Does that ever happen to you? A fear of messing up, of failing, of whatever it is?

But, God didn't leave me to sit and wonder how I could mess up. Rather, working in His amazingly wonderful timing, brought me to this blog post by Ann Voskamp. Here are some things that stood out to me:

"Creativity, it’s good theology; it’s what God did in the beginning."

God is the Creator. And we are made in His image. Creativity is a reflection of Him.

And the lines that struck me the most:

"When we stop fearing failure, we start being artists."

"Bury your fear in faith. Otherwise you bury your talents.

Beautiful words. Bury your fear in faith. Faith in Him. That is when we are really free, free to be who He created us to be, to rejoice in the gift of creativity.

Blog Alterations

I have decided to give my blog a new look...   Thus, it is now in a state of construction... or re-construction... or getting a makeover... whatever you want to call it. :-)

Sometimes I feel like Pooh Bear... :D

“"I don't see much sense in that," said Rabbit.
"No," said Pooh humbly, "there isn't. But there was going to be when I began it. It's just that something happened to it along the way."”

Kids. You Gotta Love 'Em!

I was babysitting the other night, and had brought along some books to read aloud. The conversation went something like this:

L: Are these your books?

Me:  Mhm. Well, some of them are mine, and some of them are my mommy's.

L: (surprised) You have a mommy? (pauses) I didn't think you had a mom.

:D
